Sizing and Coating Options - Presentation

LOW ENVIRONMEAL FOOTPRINT HAS BECOME IMPORTANT TO THE END CONSUMERS

Compared to the existing technology in the mills the savings in raw materials, energy use and improved operating efficiency can pay our spray sizing system back in less than a year depending on the case. The energy savings that it offers will likely have an impact if the project needs any external financing. Some governments (e.g. USA) are currently offering partial grants to projects that are solid energy savers like this one.

Here is an example of a 200,000 test liner machine with a size press.  It has three sizing options: 1) a pond, 2) a film, or 3) a spray.  The graph below illustrates the energy savings potential by showing how much water is added during the sizing to the paper and must be evaporated during one operating day.  This is one of the major savings components that spray sizing will offer to the papermaker:

Note, that energy conservation is not necessarily the only benefit from spraying.  Spray technology allows you to add exactly the desired amount of starch of the sheet surfaces and do starch profiling as needed.  This technology is also less demanding for the paper substrate strength and that can often be translated to increased use of shorter and weaker fibers and even secondary fiber in paper making.  In some cases the reduced evaporation need will offer an opportunity to increase paper production on an existing paper machine.
